NIN FAQ
Is enrolling for NIN free in Nigeria?
First-time enrolment at an accredited NIMC centre is free. Licensed enrolment partners and front-end agents sometimes charge a small convenience fee for queue management, but the underlying NIN issuance itself has no fee. Modifications and additional services (printing premium slips, urgent corrections) carry official charges set by NIMC. Always pay through the official NIMC channel or at the centre cashier with a receipt.
How long does NIN modification take?
Simple corrections handled at the NIMC centre (address, phone number) often clear within a few working days. Substantive changes (name, date of birth) take longer because they need additional verification with supporting documents like a birth certificate, sworn affidavit or school records. Plan for two to four weeks for substantive modifications. Confirm the latest expectation on the NIMC portal before you depend on a fixed deadline.
Can I have more than one NIN?
No. A person can only have one National Identification Number. Duplicate enrolments are flagged by the NIMC biometric system at capture, and one of the records is normally invalidated. If you have been enrolled twice by accident, raise a deduplication request at the nearest NIMC office with both slips. Holding two active NINs is treated as fraud and can affect downstream identity records.
How do I check if my NIN is active?
Dial *346# from the phone number registered against your NIN and follow the prompts to retrieve your NIN status. The NIMC mobile app and the NIMC portal also show your enrolment status against your phone number or tracking ID. If your NIN appears inactive after biometric capture, return to the enrolment centre with your slip to confirm the record was successfully uploaded.
Can a Nigerian abroad enrol for NIN?
Yes. Most Nigerian missions abroad offer NIN enrolment through partner centres or in-house biometric desks. The flow mirrors enrolment inside Nigeria: form completion, document verification and biometric capture. Coverage varies by country: major missions like London, Washington DC, Ottawa and Riyadh run regular enrolment days, while smaller missions schedule less often. Confirm with the relevant mission before travelling to the appointment.
What is the difference between NIN slip and premium NIN slip?
The standard NIN slip is the free paper printout you receive after enrolment, showing your NIN, name, photograph and date of birth. The premium NIN slip is a polymer card-sized version with additional security features, ordered through NIMC for a fee. Banks, the NIS and most agencies accept the standard slip. The premium slip is optional and mainly useful for daily carry.
Why is my NIN saying 'validation failed' at the bank?
Validation failures usually come from a mismatch between the data you gave the bank and what NIMC has on file. The most common causes are a misspelt name, a different date of birth, or capturing the NIN with a typo. The fix runs through NIMC modification first (where the data is wrong) and then the bank updates its records against your NIN. Do not pay anyone offering to 'force' validation without going through NIMC.
Does NigeriaHowTo collect NIN or fix records for users?
Never. NigeriaHowTo is independent and never collects NIN, BVN, passport or bank details. Any site asking you to enter your NIN to 'check' it, 'unlock' a record or 'validate' anything is not connected to NIMC. Use only the official NIMC mobile app, the NIMC portal and accredited enrolment centres. Anyone messaging users in our name and asking for NIN is not us.
