BVN FAQ

Should I share my BVN with anyone who calls?

No. Real banks never ask for your full BVN by phone, SMS, WhatsApp or email. They already have it on file. Anyone calling with a 'BVN update' or 'BVN unlock' demand and asking for your BVN, OTP or card details is running a fraud. End the call and verify with your bank by walking into a branch or calling the customer-care number on the back of your card.

Do I need a different BVN for each Nigerian bank?

No. One person has one BVN, issued through NIBSS and shared across every Nigerian bank. The whole point of BVN is that the same biometric identity links your accounts across GTB, Access, UBA, Zenith, First Bank and every other licensed Nigerian bank. If a bank tells you to 'register a fresh BVN' for a new account, push back, because they should pull your existing BVN by looking you up.

What happens if my BVN data is wrong?

Modifications are handled at the bank that originally enrolled you, with valid identification and a documented basis for the change. Name corrections typically need a sworn affidavit. Date of birth changes need a verified birth certificate. Phone number updates are simpler and can usually be done at any branch where you hold an account. Confirm current requirements at the bank counter before making the trip.

Can I get a BVN as a Nigerian living abroad?

Yes. NIBSS-accredited partners abroad now handle BVN enrolment for Nigerian residents of the UK, USA, Canada, UAE and several other countries. The flow includes biometric capture and document verification, typically at a Nigerian bank's diaspora branch or a partner identity firm. Some Nigerian missions also coordinate enrolment days. See diaspora guides for the channel that applies to your country.

How do I check my BVN number if I forgot it?

Dial *565*0# from the phone number registered against your BVN. The system returns the 11-digit BVN to that line. You can also see your BVN in the mobile banking app of any Nigerian bank where you have an account, usually under profile or account details. If your registered phone number is lost, visit the bank that enrolled you with valid identification and request retrieval.

What is the difference between BVN and NIN?

BVN identifies you to banks. It is issued by NIBSS, captures banking-related biometrics, and is required for account operation under CBN rules. NIN identifies you to the Nigerian state. It is issued by NIMC, captures broader civil identity data, and is required for passport, voter registration and SIM linking. Both are 11 digits but they live in different systems. CBN rules require them to be matched on bank records.

Why is my bank account restricted because of BVN?

Banks place a Post No Debit flag when BVN data does not match the account record, when BVN-NIN linkage fails, or under a regulator's instruction. The fix starts with confirming the specific reason at the branch (customer-care SMS rarely explains it). Most cases are name or date-of-birth mismatch fixable through the bank with supporting ID. Refuse anyone offering 'inside contacts' to lift a restriction outside the bank's official process.

Does NigeriaHowTo collect BVN or update bank records?

Never. NigeriaHowTo is independent and never collects BVN, account numbers, card details or any banking credential. BVN-related work happens at your bank, not anywhere else. Any site or message asking for your BVN to 'verify', 'unlock' or 'update' is fraud. Use only your bank's official channels and the NIBSS BVN platform when needed.
