Nigerian services in Canada

Canada is home to a large and fast-growing Nigerian community, with significant numbers in the Greater Toronto Area, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa and the Maritimes. For Nigerian-government matters โ€” passports, identity and banking โ€” Nigerians in Canada work through a mix of online portals run from Nigeria and in-person steps handled by the High Commission.

Nigeria's mission for the whole of Canada is the Nigeria High Commission in Ottawa, at 295 Metcalfe Street, Ottawa, Ontario K2P 1R9. Its consular section handles passport submission and biometric capture for applicants across the country. Because Canada is vast and Ottawa serves everyone, distance is a real factor โ€” applicants in the west or the Maritimes should watch the mission's official channels for outreach sessions, which are run periodically in other cities to reduce long journeys for biometric capture.

A useful thing to understand: most services now start online. You complete and pay for a passport application on the Nigeria Immigration Service portal, then attend the mission only for the in-person steps. Banking has moved the same way โ€” Nigerians in Canada can now open a Nigerian bank account remotely, without flying home, through the Non-Resident BVN platform.

The four guides below walk each of these through for Canada specifically: renewing your Nigerian passport, sorting out your NIN, registering or updating your BVN, and opening a Nigerian bank account from Canada. NigeriaHowTo is independent and not affiliated with any government or mission; we point you to the official channels and never ask for your personal identifiers.

Country-specific guides for Canada are still being prepared. For now, see the general guides below.
