Registering Your BVN from the United Kingdom (2026 Guide)

Who this applies to

This guide is for Nigerians in the United Kingdom who need a Bank Verification Number (BVN) but do not have one — or are not sure. The BVN is the single identity number that ties you to the Nigerian banking system. You need it to open or operate a Nigerian account, receive certain remittances, or invest in Nigeria.

For years the catch was that getting a BVN required in-person biometric capture at a branch in Nigeria. That changed in May 2025, when the Central Bank of Nigeria and NIBSS launched the Non-Resident BVN (NRBVN) platform — a fully remote route for the diaspora. If you already had a BVN before leaving Nigeria, you do not need a new one; skip to the closing section on what to do next.

What the platform asks for

The NRBVN platform verifies your identity from documents and a live capture — there is no branch visit. Confirm the current list on the official NIBSS platform; as a baseline:

DocumentDetails
Nigerian passportYour data page, valid or expired, confirming Nigerian citizenship and identity.
UK residence proofResidence permit, BRP, visa or equivalent showing your right to live in the UK.
UK proof of addressA recent utility bill, council tax letter or bank statement, usually under three months old.
Proof-of-life captureA live selfie or short video on your device, matched against your passport photo.
Parental documents (descent claims)If you are Nigerian by descent, documentation supporting the parental link may be requested.

Step-by-step: enrolling from the UK

  1. 1
Confirm you do not already have a BVNIf you banked in Nigeria before, you almost certainly already have one. Check before enrolling — you only ever need a single BVN.
  2. 2
Open the official NRBVN platformGo to the NIBSS NRBVN platform and read the eligibility framework: Nigerian by birth or descent, resident abroad.
  3. 3
Complete the applicationEnter your biographic details exactly as they appear on your Nigerian passport, so the verification matches cleanly.
  4. 4
Upload documents and do the proof-of-life checkAdd your passport and UK residency documents, then take the live selfie or video. Good lighting and a clear passport image prevent most delays.
  5. 5
Pay the one-time feePay the processing fee (about $50) through the platform. This is the only charge — CBN has confirmed there are no hidden add-ons.
  6. 6
Receive your BVN within ~72 hoursNIBSS issues your 11-digit BVN, delivered through the platform. It is identical in format to a domestic BVN and recognised by every Nigerian bank.

Where to do it in the UK — it is online

Unlike a passport renewal, BVN enrolment for the diaspora needs no embassy or High Commission visit. The NRBVN platform is a website; you complete it from home, anywhere in the UK. That is the whole point of the 2025 reform — to remove the branch-visit barrier.

Be cautious of anything that contradicts this. There is no UK "BVN centre" you must physically attend, and no official process that requires handing your documents to an intermediary. If a service asks you to pay extra to "expedite" or to share your details by message, treat it as a scam.

Fees and timing — honest expectations

The fee is a one-time processing charge of about $50, paid on the platform for the remote verification. CBN has publicly clarified that this is the only charge and that no hidden fees were introduced. Because amounts can be reviewed, confirm the current figure on the official NIBSS platform before paying.

Issuance is fast: within roughly 72 hours of a clean application. The usual cause of delay is not eligibility but document quality — a blurry passport image or a poor live capture — which the platform's support channel helps you resolve.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Enrolling again when you already have a BVN. Re-use your existing number — duplicates cause problems, not convenience.
  • Typing your name differently from your passport. Mismatches between your entry and your passport stall the verification.
  • Paying a middleman to 'help'. The platform reads your documents directly; an agent only adds cost and risk. Apply yourself.
  • Submitting a stale UK address document. Use a proof of address under three months old.
  • Trusting any 'fee' beyond the official one. CBN says the $50 processing charge is the only cost — anything extra is a red flag.

Got your BVN? Open the account next

With your BVN in hand, the next step is opening the Nigerian account itself through a bank's diaspora desk. Our UK guide walks it through.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really get a Nigerian BVN from the UK without travelling?

Yes. The Non-Resident BVN (NRBVN) platform, launched by the Central Bank of Nigeria and NIBSS in May 2025, lets diaspora Nigerians enrol for a BVN remotely. It replaced the old requirement to attend a Nigerian bank branch in person for biometric capture.

Who is eligible for an NRBVN?

Nigerians by birth and Nigerians by descent (citizenship through either parent) who live outside Nigeria, including dual nationals. If you live in Nigeria, you use the ordinary domestic BVN route at a branch instead.

I had a BVN before I left Nigeria. Do I need an NRBVN too?

No. You only ever have one BVN. If you already hold a domestic BVN, you do not enrol again — you simply use your existing number with any Nigerian bank, including for opening a diaspora account.

What documents does the NRBVN platform ask for?

Your Nigerian passport (valid or expired) for identity, UK residency proof such as a residence permit or visa, and a recent UK proof of address, plus a live proof-of-life capture taken on your device. Confirm the current list on the official NIBSS platform.

How much does it cost and how long does it take?

The processing fee is about $50, paid once on the platform, and NIBSS issues the BVN within roughly 72 hours of a clean application. CBN has stated the $50 is the only charge — be wary of anyone asking for more.

Does NigeriaHowTo handle BVN enrolment or need my details?

No. We are an independent guide with no government or bank affiliation, and we never ask for your BVN, passport number or payment details. Enrol only on the official NIBSS NRBVN platform.
