Who this applies to

This guide is for Nigerians in Germany who need a Bank Verification Number (BVN) and do not have one. The BVN is the single identity number linking you to the Nigerian banking system — needed to open or run a Nigerian account, receive certain remittances, or invest in Nigeria.

Getting one used to require in-person biometric capture at a branch in Nigeria. Since May 2025, the Non-Resident BVN (NRBVN) platform from CBN and NIBSS provides a fully remote route for the diaspora. If you already had a BVN before you left, you do not need a new one — skip to the next step.

What the platform asks for

The NRBVN platform verifies you from documents plus a live capture — no branch visit. Confirm the current list on the official NIBSS platform; as a baseline:

DocumentDetails
Nigerian passportYour data page, valid or expired, confirming Nigerian citizenship and identity.
German residence proofResidence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) or visa showing your right to live in Germany.
German proof of addressA recent registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung), utility bill or bank statement, usually under three months old.
Proof-of-life captureA live selfie or short video on your device, matched against your passport photo.
Parental documents (descent claims)If you are Nigerian by descent, documentation supporting the parental link may be requested.

Step-by-step: enrolling from Germany

  1. 1
Confirm you don't already have a BVNIf you banked in Nigeria before, you almost certainly have one. Check first — you only ever need a single BVN.
  2. 2
Open the official NRBVN platformGo to the NIBSS NRBVN platform and review the eligibility framework: Nigerian by birth or descent, resident abroad.
  3. 3
Complete the applicationEnter your biographic details exactly as on your Nigerian passport so the verification matches cleanly.
  4. 4
Upload documents and do the proof-of-life checkAdd your passport and German residency documents, then take the live selfie or video. Clear images prevent most delays.
  5. 5
Pay the one-time feePay the processing fee (about $50) on the platform. This is the only charge — CBN has confirmed there are no hidden add-ons.
  6. 6
Receive your BVN within ~72 hoursNIBSS issues your 11-digit BVN through the platform. It is identical to a domestic BVN and recognised by every Nigerian bank.

Where to do it in Germany — it is online

BVN enrolment for the diaspora needs no embassy visit. The NRBVN platform is a website you complete from home, anywhere in Germany. Removing the branch-visit barrier was the whole purpose of the 2025 reform.

Treat anything that contradicts this as suspect. There is no German "BVN centre" you must attend, and no official step that requires handing your documents to a middleman. If a service demands extra money to "expedite" or asks for your details by message, it is not legitimate.

Fees and timing — honest expectations

The fee is a one-time processing charge of about $50 for the remote verification. CBN has publicly clarified this is the only charge and that no hidden fees were introduced. Confirm the current figure on the official NIBSS platform before paying.

Issuance is fast — within roughly 72 hours of a clean application. Delays usually trace to document quality, which the platform's support channel helps resolve.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Enrolling again when you already have a BVN. Re-use your existing number — duplicates cause problems.
  • Entering your name differently from your passport. Mismatches stall the verification.
  • Paying a middleman. The platform reads your documents directly; an agent only adds cost and risk.
  • Submitting a stale German address document. Use proof of address under three months old.
  • Trusting any 'fee' beyond the official one. CBN says the $50 processing charge is the only cost — anything more is a red flag.

With your BVN in hand, the next step is opening the Nigerian account through a bank's diaspora desk. Our Germany guide walks it through.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a Nigerian BVN from Germany without travelling?

Yes. The Non-Resident BVN (NRBVN) platform, launched by CBN and NIBSS in May 2025, lets diaspora Nigerians enrol remotely. It replaced the old in-person biometric capture at a Nigerian branch.

Who is eligible?

Nigerians by birth and Nigerians by descent (citizenship through either parent) living outside Nigeria, including dual nationals. Nigeria-resident applicants use the domestic branch route instead.

I already had a BVN before moving to Germany. Do I need an NRBVN?

No. You only ever have one BVN. Use your existing number — there is no need to enrol again.

What does the platform ask for?

Your Nigerian passport (valid or expired), German residency and address documents, and a live proof-of-life capture on your device. Confirm the exact list on the official NIBSS platform.

How much is it and how fast is it?

About $50, paid once on the platform, with the BVN issued within roughly 72 hours of a clean application. CBN has stated the $50 is the only charge.

Does NigeriaHowTo run BVN enrolment or need my details?

No. We are independent, with no government or bank affiliation, and never ask for your BVN, passport number or payment details. Enrol only on the official NIBSS NRBVN platform.
