Quick answer

Inside Nigeria, a Nigerian passport costs ₦100,000 for the 32-page 5-year and ₦200,000 for the 64-page 10-year, since the NIS fee review of 1 September 2025. Diaspora applicants pay the NIS USD anchor rate of $150 and $230 respectively, with individual missions sometimes publishing slightly different booklet fees and an administrative fee on top. Lost-passport replacements abroad add a penalty of $350 to $370 depending on the consulate.

Fees inside Nigeria

The Nigeria Immigration Service issued an upward review of standard passport fees with effect from 1 September 2025. The review applies only to applications made inside Nigeria.

BookletInside-Nigeria fee (since 1 Sept 2025)
32-page, 5-year₦100,000. The standard adult option and the only choice for minors.
64-page, 5-yearNot separately priced in the September 2025 NIS press release for inside-Nigeria applicants. Where offered at a centre, expect a figure between the 32-page 5-year and 64-page 10-year. Check immigration.gov.ng for the current rate.
64-page, 10-year₦200,000. Restricted to adults aged 18 and over.

There is no 32-page 10-year Nigerian passport. The 10-year validity is sold only as a 64-page booklet.

The fee is paid on immigration.gov.ng via Remita or card. Inside Nigeria, there is no separately published penalty for replacements of lost or damaged passports — the standard booklet fee applies, and the police report or written explanation of damage serves as the formal record.

Fees for Nigerians abroad

The September 2025 review explicitly left diaspora fees unchanged. The NIS USD anchor rates remain:

BookletNIS USD anchor (diaspora)
32-page, 5-year$<Fact path='passport.fees.diasporaStandard32page5year.usd' format='raw'/>. The NIS-published anchor for all diaspora missions.
64-page, 5-yearNot separately published as a NIS anchor. Most missions price it locally — for example $162 at the US consulates in New York and Atlanta.
64-page, 10-year$<Fact path='passport.fees.diasporaStandard64page10year.usd' format='raw'/>. The NIS-published anchor; restricted to adults aged 18 and over.

Individual missions sometimes publish slightly different booklet fees from the NIS USD anchor, with administrative charges layered on top. Check the specific mission's page before paying.

Worked example — US consulates (New York and Atlanta)

The two largest US missions both publish the same booklet schedule and add an administrative charge.

ItemUS consulate fee
32-page, 5-year (booklet)$<Fact path='passport.fees.diasporaUsa32page5yearBookletFee.usd' format='raw'/>. Published by both the Consulate General of Nigeria, New York and the Consulate General of Nigeria, Atlanta.
64-page, 5-year (booklet)$<Fact path='passport.fees.diasporaUsa64page5yearBookletFee.usd' format='raw'/>. Same at both consulates.
64-page, 10-year (booklet)$<Fact path='passport.fees.diasporaUsa64page10yearBookletFee.usd' format='raw'/>. Adults 18+ only.
Administrative fee$<Fact path='passport.fees.diasporaUsaAdminFee.usd' format='raw'/>. NY consulate, charged at the in-person appointment by card.
Lost/stolen passport penalty$<Fact path='passport.fees.lostPassportPenaltyUsaNewYork.usd' format='raw'/> in New York, $<Fact path='passport.fees.lostPassportPenaltyUsaAtlanta.usd' format='raw'/> in Atlanta. By USPS Money Order only.
Emergency Travel Certificate$<Fact path='passport.fees.emergencyTravelCertificateUsa.usd' format='raw'/> at the NY consulate, by USPS Money Order. Other missions price the ETC and the newer Nigeria Temporary Passport separately.

The total a US-based adult pays for a 32-page 5-year passport at New York is $142 booklet + $50 admin = $192, plus USPS return postage. The Atlanta total differs slightly because Atlanta lists no separate administrative fee on its published schedule. Confirm the breakdown on the mission's website before sending a money order.

Other Nigerian missions worldwide

Every Nigerian high commission, embassy, and consulate publishes its own fee schedule in local currency, anchored to the NIS USD rates.

  • NHC London (UK) charges the passport application fee at the NIS anchor in GBP, plus a £20 UK postal order administrative fee and a self-addressed Royal Mail C4 special-delivery envelope.
  • Embassy of Nigeria, Sweden charges an administrative fee of 500 SEK for minor reissue and 1,000 SEK for damaged-passport reissue, on top of the standard NIS-anchor passport fee.
  • High Commission in Ottawa (Canada), Embassy of Nigeria, Germany, High Commission, Kuala Lumpur, and Consulate General, Johannesburg all publish their own equivalents.

Missions sometimes publish slightly different rates from the NIS USD anchor; check the specific mission's page before paying.

Emergency travel — ETC and Nigeria Temporary Passport

Stranded Nigerians abroad without a valid passport apply for either an Emergency Travel Certificate (the older paper document) or the Nigeria Temporary Passport (the ICAO-compliant 4-page e-passport that has replaced the ETC at most missions since March 2021).

  • ETC — $150 by USPS Money Order at the Consulate General of Nigeria, New York. Valid for a one-way journey to Nigeria, six weeks from issue.
  • NTP — priced locally by each mission. Valid for 30 days, one journey only, retrieved at the Nigerian port of entry.

Both are paid for separately from any standard passport fee. Neither replaces your e-passport — you must still apply for a full re-issue once you are back in Nigeria or once your mission completes a replacement. For the full route, see emergency travel certificate and lost Nigerian passport.

What the passport fee does not include

The NIS passport fee buys you the booklet and the appointment. It does not cover:

  • NIN enrolment. Free at NIMC for the basic NIN; corrections cost separately.
  • NPC birth certificate. Issued by the National Population Commission, with its own administrative fee at the state office.
  • Local government identification letter. Issued by your LG secretariat, usually for a small administrative charge.
  • Guarantor's form endorsement. The form itself is free from the portal. Commissioners for Oaths in High Courts charge a small administrative fee for the endorsement, typically a few thousand naira.
  • Sworn affidavit for lost-passport cases. A High Court charge of a few thousand naira.
  • Passport photographs. Photo studio fees outside the application.
  • Travel and accommodation if your booked passport centre is in a different city.

None of these are part of the NIS fee. Anyone billing you a single "all-in" figure that bundles them is either marking up the standard NIS rate or is not part of the official process.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Nigerian passport cost in 2026?

Inside Nigeria, the 32-page 5-year passport is ₦100,000 and the 64-page 10-year is ₦200,000, since the NIS fee review of 1 September 2025. Diaspora applicants pay $150 and $230 respectively at NIS USD anchor rates, with individual missions sometimes charging slightly different booklet fees.

How much is a 64-page 5-year Nigerian passport?

Diaspora consulates including New York and Atlanta list the 64-page 5-year at $162 booklet fee. The September 2025 NIS press release did not separately price the 64-page 5-year for inside-Nigeria applications; check immigration.gov.ng for the current figure before paying.

How much extra does a lost or stolen Nigerian passport cost to replace?

Inside Nigeria, the same standard fee applies with no separately published penalty surcharge. Diaspora missions add a penalty on top of the standard booklet fee — $350 at the Consulate General of Nigeria, New York and $370 at the Consulate General of Nigeria, Atlanta.

How much does an Emergency Travel Certificate cost?

$150 by USPS Money Order at the Consulate General of Nigeria, New York. Other Nigerian missions publish their own ETC fees in local currency. The newer Nigeria Temporary Passport that replaces the paper ETC at most missions is priced separately by each mission.

Did Nigerian passport fees increase in 2025?

Yes. On 1 September 2025 the Nigeria Immigration Service raised inside-Nigeria fees from ₦50,000 to ₦100,000 for the 32-page 5-year, and from ₦100,000 to ₦200,000 for the 64-page 10-year. Diaspora USD anchor rates were left unchanged at $150 and $230.

Why does the US consulate charge $142 when the NIS anchor is $150 for a 32-page 5-year?

Consulate booklet fees are set in USD locally and do not always match the published NIS anchor exactly. Missions sometimes publish slightly different rates from the NIS USD anchor; check the specific mission's page before paying. The total cost typically includes an administrative fee on top, which is what closes the gap.

How do I pay for a Nigerian passport?

Inside Nigeria, on immigration.gov.ng via Remita or card. Diaspora applicants use USPS Money Orders (US missions), UK postal orders (NHC London), or local bank transfer where the mission specifies. Cash is not accepted at any mission for passport fees.

Is the guarantor's form charged separately?

No. The guarantor's form is generated from the portal as part of the application; there is no extra government fee for it. Some Commissioners for Oaths charge a small administrative fee in court for endorsing the form, typically a few thousand naira.
