NYSC Service Year
NYSC Service Year FAQ
Common questions about nysc service year in Nigeria, answered briefly. For full walkthroughs, see the nysc service year guides.
Does NigeriaHowTo handle NYSC redeployment requests?
No. Redeployment is a formal request you submit through your NYSC State Secretariat with documented grounds: health (with medical report from a federal teaching hospital), marriage (with court marriage certificate), or security. NigeriaHowTo publishes guidance only. Anyone offering to 'guarantee' a redeployment for a fee is running a scam, since approval rests entirely with the NYSC secretariat.
What is the difference between mobilisation, deployment and PPA?
Mobilisation is being cleared as eligible for service by your school and NYSC, after your school uploads your name to the Senate List. Deployment is being assigned to a state of primary assignment. PPA is the specific organisation within that state where you actually report and serve, assigned during or after orientation camp. The three steps happen in sequence over the first weeks of service.
Can foreign-trained graduates serve NYSC?
Yes. Graduates of foreign universities go through a parallel mobilisation route via NYSC headquarters in Abuja. The process requires degree evaluation through the Ministry of Education, document attestation, and biographical capture. Foreign-trained corps members are typically deployed to the next stream after their verification clears. Bring originals of your degree, transcript and attestation when you visit the NYSC headquarters.
What should I pack for NYSC orientation camp?
Essentials: white round-neck T-shirts and white shorts (NYSC issues khaki jungle wear and boots at camp), white sneakers, plain socks, plain bedsheets, a bucket, plate, spoon, cup, padlock for your locker, basic toiletries and a reasonable cash reserve. Avoid heavy electronics and jewellery. Camps run regimented schedules, so pack light and durable. Confirm the latest packing list with your specific orientation camp.
What is the NYSC allowance and how is it paid?
The federal government pays corps members a monthly allowance (allawee) credited directly to the bank account you registered with NYSC during online registration. State governments and some PPAs add a state allowance or stipend on top, varying by location and assignment. The federal allowance is reviewed periodically. Check the latest amount on the NYSC portal before assuming an exact figure.
Can I serve in my home state?
Generally no for the first deployment. NYSC's national unity mandate sends corps members outside their state of origin and state of residence. Exceptions are health-based or marriage-based redeployment after initial posting. The geo-political-zone rule also means you usually serve outside your home zone, not just outside your state. The system intentionally rotates corps members across the country.
Can I work a paid job during NYSC?
Yes, with caveats. Your PPA assignment is your primary commitment, and most PPAs do not allow outside paid work during PPA hours. Many corps members run side businesses, remote freelance work or evening teaching outside PPA hours. Skip work that conflicts with PPA attendance, because your clearance and final certificate depend on monthly clearance signatures from the PPA supervisor.
How long does NYSC service take?
Standard NYSC service is one calendar year from the date of orientation camp opening to the passing out parade. The year breaks into three weeks of orientation camp, 11 months of primary assignment with monthly clearance, and the final passing out parade and certificate collection. Losing a month from missed clearance can extend the service period.
