Who this applies to

This guide is for Nigerian citizens living in the United States whose passport has expired, is close to expiry, or is full of stamps. Your route runs through the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) online portal first, then an in-person biometric appointment at the Nigerian mission that covers your state.

One distinction to settle before you start. A renewal or re-issue is for a passport that has expired, is within six months of expiry, or has run out of pages. A replacement is for a passport that is lost, stolen, or badly damaged — that needs a US police report and extra steps, so use our replacement guidance for those cases. Everything below assumes a renewal.

Documents you will need

Each mission publishes its own checklist and updates it from time to time. Use the list below to prepare, then confirm the current requirements on your mission's official site before your appointment.

DocumentDetails
Current or expired Nigerian passportBring the booklet you are replacing, plus a clear photocopy of the data page.
National Identification Number (NIN)Your NIN slip or number. The details should match the name and date of birth in your passport.
Passport photographA recent photo with a plain white background, to the standard specification.
Proof of US residence or statusSome applicants are asked to show a US address or immigration status. Have it ready in case it is requested.
NIS payment receipt and appointment slipPrinted from the portal after you pay and book. Bring printed copies to the mission.
Return-shipping arrangementSome missions ask for a prepaid shipping label or envelope so the finished booklet can be returned to you. Check your mission's instructions.

Step-by-step: renewing from the US

  1. 1
Confirm your NIN matches your passportCheck that your name, spelling and date of birth on your NIN agree with your old passport. Mismatches are the most common cause of delay.

  3. 3
Pay through the portalPay the diaspora fee (charged in US dollars) on the portal. Save and print the payment receipt and acknowledgement slip.
  4. 4
Book at the mission covering your stateSelect an available biometric appointment at the Embassy in Washington DC or the consulate in New York or Atlanta, depending on where you live.
  5. 5
Attend in person for biometricsGo on your appointment date with your documents. Staff capture your photo, fingerprints and signature. Plan for the mission's stated opening hours.
  6. 6
Wait for production and returnYour booklet is produced and then returned to you — by the shipping arrangement your mission uses, or by collection where offered.

Where to do it in the US

Nigeria runs an embassy and two consulates general in the United States, each covering a region of the country. Book at the one responsible for your address — the missions list the states they serve on their official sites.

DocumentDetails
Embassy of Nigeria, Washington DC3519 International Court NW, Washington, DC 20008. Handles consular and passport services for its region. Confirm covered states and consular hours on the official embassy site.
Consulate General, New YorkServes the north-eastern region. Check the consulate's official site for the exact states it covers and current passport instructions.
Consulate General, AtlantaServes the southern region. Check the consulate's official site for covered states and current appointment arrangements.
Outreach / mobile captureMissions occasionally run biometric outreach in cities away from their main office. These are announced on official mission channels — verify there before travelling.

Fees and timing — honest expectations

The diaspora passport fee is charged in US dollars on the NIS portal during your application, and it is reviewed periodically. Some missions also ask you to cover return shipping. Because these amounts change, this guide does not quote a fixed figure — confirm the current fee on the official portal and your mission's site before paying.

For timing, plan for several weeks from your biometric capture, occasionally longer when demand or booklet supply is tight. Demand spikes around summer and the December holidays, so booking early helps on both fees-clarity and slot availability.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Booking at the wrong mission. The DC embassy and the New York and Atlanta consulates cover different states. Confirm which one serves your address before you book.
  • Turning up without completing and paying online first. The mission expects a printed receipt and appointment slip on the day.
  • NIN and passport details that disagree. A spelling or date-of-birth mismatch will hold the application. Fix it before booking.
  • Assuming someone can attend on your behalf. Biometric capture is in person — plan to go yourself.
  • Using an unofficial 'passport agent' site. Pay only on the official NIS portal and your mission's official channels. Nobody legitimate needs your card details by message.

Sorting out banking from the US too?

Many US-based Nigerians renewing a passport also want a working Nigerian bank account for family support and remittances. Our US guide covers the remote, travel-free route.

Frequently asked questions

Do I renew my Nigerian passport at the embassy or online?

Both. You begin online on the Nigeria Immigration Service portal — choose the re-issue/renewal option, complete the form, pay, and book an appointment. You then attend the Nigerian mission that covers your state in person for biometric capture (photo, fingerprints, signature). The online step must come first.

Which Nigerian mission do I use — DC, New York or Atlanta?

It depends on where you live. The Embassy in Washington DC and the Consulates General in New York and Atlanta each cover defined regions of the United States. Check each mission's official site for the states it serves, and book at the one covering your address.

Can I renew before my Nigerian passport expires?

Yes. You can start while your passport is still valid, and the Nigeria Immigration Service generally advises beginning when about six months of validity remain. Renewing early keeps you covered while the new booklet is produced.

Do I need a NIN to renew from the US?

Your application references your National Identification Number, and the details on it should match your passport. If you do not have a NIN yet, resolve that first. Confirm the current requirement on the official NIS portal before booking, as it can change.

Do I have to attend in person, or can someone go for me?

Biometric capture is done in person — your fingerprints, photo and signature are taken at the mission, so you must attend on your appointment date. Confirm any exceptions directly with the mission. Be cautious of anyone offering to 'stand in' for a fee.

Does NigeriaHowTo process passport applications?

No. We are an independent guide with no government affiliation. Every application must be completed on the official NIS portal and at a Nigerian embassy or consulate. We will never ask you for your NIN, passport number or payment details.
